Assistive Technologies in the Workplace
Technology is considered "the great equalizer", giving people with disabilities better opportunities to communicate, learn, participate, and achieve greater levels of independence. Perhaps most importantly, new technologies enable people with disabilities to perform competitively in the workplace. NOD offers information on assistive technology, technological accessibility, and technology’s impact on the participation and contribution of people with disabilities.
Assistive technology includes any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Devices can range from alternative key pads to voice-activated computer systems. Some of the most commonly used assistive technology devices are:
- Alternative keypads, keyboards, or handgrips;
- Computer screen magnification or large screens;
- Screen readers; and
- Voice recognition software.
