College students and graduates with disabilities comprise a talent pool that can fill the gap for employers seeking skilled, motivated employees. An estimated 4.7 million college graduates nationwide have a disclosed disability, yet only 25% of them are employed-compared to 76% of their non-disabled peers. During this session, Howard Green and Felicia M. Nurmsen from the National Organization on Disability (NOD) will share how to understand reasonable accommodations as applicable to students and candidates with disabilities and describe successful initiatives that foster inclusivity and a disability-friendly environment. Attendees will also learn and understand issues for self-disclosure and discover tools to assist your communication with applicants with disabilities.

As human, we struggle with what is the right thing to say or what to be considerate of doing when interacting with an individual with a disability. During this session, presenters will collaborate with DirectEmployers disability partners and subject matter experts (SME) to take a deep dive into experiential learning through scenarios and group discourse designed to offer unique conference experiences and valuable resource takeaways. The audience will embark on a journey designed for dialog appropriate for every day occurrences, best practice training and understanding of the evolution of language within this community.
This highly interactive session will provide attendees with a hands-on learning experience from both SMEs and their peers, while also providing solutions to topics associated with the interviewing, self-disclosure and workplace accommodations made for individuals with disabilities.
