The National Organization on Disability (NOD) is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes the full participation of America’s 56 million people with disabilities in all aspects of life. NOD is a leader in helping corporate America transform their human capital policies, programs and practices to increase the hiring, engagement, development and retention of individuals with disabilities. While the quality of life for people with disabilities in this country has improved dramatically in the quarter of a century since the Americans with Disabilities Act, there is one critical exception: access to the workforce. The employment rate for working aged Americans with disabilities today is just 20%, virtually unchanged since the end of World War II.

Our work with clients is a critical part of achieving NOD’s mission by helping create the conditions where people with disabilities can succeed and thrive in the corporate world. We use what we learn through this work to raise awareness and ultimately change public opinion about the value of this untapped talent pool. Our services include our data-driven Disability Employment Tracker™, an assessment and benchmarking tool, disability awareness and etiquette training and a variety of advisory services designed to deliver solutions to our clients’ disability inclusion needs. Our Corporate Leadership Council brings employers together to learn from us and each other.

The Managing Director (MD) of Professional Services is a vital member of the NOD team, and sits on the Management Team. The MD will engage in business development and sales, client relationship management, engagement design and delivery, and other projects as requested.  This is a full-time position and reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer.



The Managing Director will oversee and assure the success of Professional Services and will also sell across NOD full portfolio or products and services.

  • Selling and Relationship Management:
    • Lead all aspects of selling, proposal writing and deal closing, including:
      • Take primary responsibility for the recruitment of new clients to meet sales and impact goals
      • Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer in the management of the sales process and pipeline, seeking to increase sales effectiveness and process efficiency
      • Cultivate prospects that can be converted to revenue-generating clients
      • Lead client and prospect meetings to understand their business, disability hiring goals and consulting support needs
      • Synthesize market information, client information and NOD thought leadership to craft a scope of recommended services
      • Write proposals and statements of work including crafting the approach and develop the cost to serve fee estimate
      • Negotiate engagement terms and conditions and successfully close new deals
    • Act as a Relationship Manager to new and established clients and partners, keeping them apprised of developments at NOD and maximizing opportunities for engagement
  • Engagement Delivery:
    • Deliver high quality client services and achieve revenue targets
      • Lead project teams to design and implement recommendations and solutions
      • Develop engaging, client ready deliverables that are professional and polished
      • Enhance relationships with existing clients and secure add-on work
    • Build the in-house and external capabilities to deliver client services
      • Hire and manage Professional Services staff and assure their professional development
      • Build and nurture a network of external associates who bring specialty skills that augment NOD’s capabilities, as client demands warrant
      • Serve as the primary point of contact for day to day questions and concerns from professional services clients and partners
  • Intellectual Capital and Thought Leadership:
    • Identify opportunities to strengthen the enterprise, and lead, or collaborate with colleagues to carry out, such projects
    • Refine, execute and grow the Disability Employment Tracker™, an essential sales and thought leadership platform
    • Assure that data and other assets from client engagements are collected and aggregated to support:
      • Quality improvement
      • Codifying the content and tools used in the delivery of each engagement
      • Marketing and NOD’s thought leadership agenda
    • Represent NOD in conferences, webinars and other forums to advance NOD’s brand as the leading voice in disability employment
    • Contribute to thought leadership development by authoring articles, client testimonials and case studies, and supporting various PR and marketing activities
    • Collaborate with the Director of External Affairs to assure the success of the Corporate Leadership Council (CLC), positioning it as the premier corporate membership group in the disability arena, and assuring that it meets revenue goals
  • Business Development and Planning:
    • Work as a member of the Management Team to shape NOD’s agenda and assure the overall success of the organization
    • Lead the periodic review and update of the Professional Services business plan to reflect service delivery experience, market conditions and financial considerations
    • Establish and manage the revenue and expense budgets for this profit center
    • Collaborate with NOD’s President and Management Team in identifying opportunities for, establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships
    • Drive the end-to-end scoping, planning, management and delivery of special projects designed to build NOD’s professional services or other market offerings, as assigned by the COO
    • Support successful stewardship of investors in the enterprise and other NOD funders through providing reports, presentations and other assistance as needed
    • Provide reports and presentations periodically to the Board of Directors, and work closely with the Business Development Committee
    • Carry out such other activities as may be required to assure the success of the enterprise.


You will bring your expertise in consulting, human resources, partnership building and leadership, as well as your commitment to expanding economic opportunity for people with disabilities. Though the ability to work in teams of NOD staff and clients is critical, it is equally important to be entrepreneurial – able to generate new ideas, create plans and drive them to completion. The position requires someone who can see the big picture and find innovative solutions while providing highest quality execution with attention to detail. You’ll be expected to demonstrate the following abilities and aptitudes in your work:

  • Interpersonal Acumen
    • Stature, gravitas, and confidence to gain the credibility and respect of corporate partners, NOD’s Board of Directors, and the public. You’ll be an exceptionally strong communicator with experience and comfort with public speaking and representing NOD externally. You’ll be innovative, persuasive, and entrepreneurial, and will evidence strong listening skills and the ability to anticipate and work through potential problems.
    • The ability to develop positive and productive working relationships and alliances at all levels across NOD, as well as externally. He or she will bring a healthy ego with the confidence to lead and be part of a competent, resourceful and fast moving team. S/he will be comfortable in an evolving culture and can add value to NOD at large.
  • Executing for Results
    • The ability to set and achieve program and business goals. This will include the ability to formulate and manage individual and team/organizational goals and the ability to work independently and make mid-course corrections, if needed, in a quick and efficient manner.
  • Management/Leadership
    • A highly collaborative, consensus building management style, evidenced by the ability to delegate, as well as work with senior leadership within NOD, while executing large projects with multiple processes. You will be a visible and accessible manager and leader who is able to set expectations and manage objectives.
  • Strategy and Implementation
    • Act as a strategic and visionary professional, as well as a change agent and builder, who contributes significantly to shaping the future direction of NOD.  You will evidence the ability to anticipate new opportunities for NOD, sound judgment and calculated risk taking. You will be forward thinking and committed to new ways of raising the visibility of NOD and making a significant impact; a quick and versatile learner to understand the history and existing culture within NOD and the disability community at large.
